Daniel Mealie is a Geospatial Analyst supporting ISW’s Ukraine conflict mapping program. Daniel joined ISW as a Geospatial Intelligence intern in 2022. Since joining full-time in 2023, Daniel has supported ISW-CTP’s coverage of the October 7th War as well as the Syrian Civil War. Daniel wrote a paper on Russian Airborne Force (VDV) deployments around Bakhmut in 2023 and argued that the Ukrainian defensive operations near the city pinned down valuable Russian units and prevented them from laterally redeploying to other parts of the frontline.

Daniel’s research interests include emergency management, satellite imagery Russian anti-air and area denial, along with spatial statistics. Daniel’s interest in geospatial intelligence stems from an opportunity he had in undergraduate college to make a map of the Al-Hol refugee camp by using open-source satellite imagery.

Daniel graduated from George Mason University with a Bachelor of Arts in geography in 2022.
