Jackson Karas is a China Researcher at the Institute for the Study of War. Jackson previously interned at ISW with the China team in the summer of 2024 and is an alumnus of the Hertog War Studies Program. His time with ISW, both as an intern and participant in the War Studies Program, motivated his interest in ISW’s work and mission. Jackson also participated in a 2023 seminar on military theory and strategy at the American Enterprise Institute. His academic experience has largely centered on military history, particularly in conceptualizing the relationship between ideology and the development of military doctrine in the Soviet Union, Communist China, and Fascist Italy.
Jackson graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University in May 2025 with a BA, majoring in both history and philosophy. His study of history has focused on Western Europe and China in the 19th and 20th centuries. Jackson was also inducted into the Georgetown chapter of the Phi Beta Kappa honors society in the spring of 2025, as well as Georgetown’s History honors society.
