- August/September 2010: All U.S. surge troops arrive in Afghanistan
- September 1, 2010: Change of mission in Iraq to “stability operations” and drawdown to 50,000 U.S. troops in country
- September 2010: Provincial elections scheduled for Afghanistan
- September/October 2010: Kandahar offensive commences in Afghanistan (tentative)
- October 2010: Government formation ends in Iraq (tentative)
- December 2010: Scheduled White House review of the war in Afghanistan
- July 2011: Drawdown of U.S. troops from Afghanistan commences
- December 31, 2011: All U.S. troops must be out of Iraq under the terms of the current security agreement
* Note: The current security agreement, which was signed by the Bush administration in 2008, expires on December 31, 2011. If U.S. troops are to remain in Iraq after this date, a new security agreement must be signed. Iraq must initiate these negotiations and they must take place in advance of this deadline.
