Celebrating the 4th of July

This weekend over 300 million Americans will celebrate the birthday of the United States and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence two hundred and thirty-four years ago on July 4, 1776. In near seclusion in Philadelphia, Thomas Jefferson labored throughout June of that year over what would become the most enduring piece of his legacy.
 

 “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”

Today, America strives to uphold the founding principles set forth in the Declaration of Independence and is the symbol of freedom and democracy across the globe. This year the Institute for the Study of War is proud to partner with Philadelphia’s own WHYY for the premiere television screening of ISW’s documentary The Surge: the Untold Story. Please join us Friday, July 2nd at 10:30pm EST to watch never-before-seen interviews from high profile figures like General David Petraeus, General Raymond Odierno, and Ambassador Ryan Crocker. This documentary reveals the personalities of this generation of U.S. military leaders and explains how they successfully implemented a counterinsurgency campaign in Iraq that brought the country back from the brink of civil war and catastrophe.

Whether you’re out on the National Mall to watch fireworks or enjoying a cookout with family and friends this 4th of July, please take the time to remember those who, in the immortal words of the Declaration of Independence, have pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor in the name of liberty and democracy.
