Is Kandahar the new Baghdad?
Last week ISW released the third publication in our Afghanistan Report Series, The Taliban’s Campaign for Kandahar by Carl Forsberg. This comprehensive study explains why sending more forces, particularly to Kandahar, is critical for successful U.S. counterinsurgency operations. The 2 page executive summary and 72 page report provides a detailed and authoritative overview of the history of Kandahar’s tribes and geography throughout the eight-year-long war.
Following the announcement of President Obama’s strategy last week, ISW hosted a panel of experts to discuss 2010 expectations in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Guest speakers included Dr. Michael O’Hanlon from the Brookings Institute and Dr. Ashley Tellis from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
Finally, ISW senior fellows and research analysts continue to help shape the public policy debate on Afghanistan with numerous media appearances following the President’s speech at West Point. Please take a few moments to watch or read a sample of ISW in the media.
Happy Holidays,
